FAQ

Why does Linux lack all important programs like Adobe PDF, Microsoft Office and games like FIFA?
Why does Linux lack all important programs like Adobe PDF Microsoft Office and games like FIFA? The answer to this is sadly becausepanies like Adobe Microsoft and EA have specifically and wilfully declined to support Linux as a target platform for their software. Why? There are any number of reasons. Adobe used to provide Acrobat Reader natively for Linux but discontinued support for it years ago. The reason is probably money Reader use often leads to Acrobat Pro purchases on Windows and Macs but theyve never released (to my knowledge) a version of the Pro software on Linux. It a loss-leader with no hope of recovery. Besides there are plenty of free packages available for various distros that do as good a job (if not better) than Reader ever did. Microsoft has always had a hate on for Linux seeing it as lost sales of their Server line of operating systems. Sure theyve sort-of made peace with Linux or at least presented the impression of making peace in order to try and claw back some market share. Theyve released Office software for Android - which is based on the Linux kernel - but not after all these years for any desktop distro of Linux. EA is just EA. EA will continue to do the most EA thing that EA can do which is be the worst because that what EA does. To the best of my ability to recall (and search via Google) there is not a single game published by EA that has native Linux support. Hell their support for Mac s isn that great. Want to play Sims on Mac? No? How about Sims? No? How about SimCity? No? Well We have a couple of other games that a handful of people may want to play It pretty sad. The short answer is until morepanies start supporting Linux and demonstrating that there is a viable paying market share to tap into manypanies won bother porting. Now Valve - through Steam - has done a great job of promoting Linux as a viable gaming platform. I own a fairly large number of games in my library; of the total perhaps 435% can also run on a Mac but ~3% are available on Linux and that number has been steadily increasing. The call for native Linux versions of many games can be heard in the games discussion boards on Steam. The need is out there.
How can I convert a PDF to Word?
There is no good way to use Microsoft Word to edit PDFs. Microsoft Word is used for authoring an original document not modifying a portable document. True Word can import some data from a PDF. That feature is useful when you are authoring a new document and wish to salvage data from a PDF to prevent time spent entering data. In that case it is best to import the PDF into a file by itself and strip it of formatting then copy and paste it into your pre-formatted document as Normal . Then you will proceed to make other formatting changes for headings section numbering etc. If you must edit a PDF directly your edits should be minor. Even in Adobe Acrobat DC Pro you are limited in how much editing you can do. Fix a misspelled word maybe replace a word here or there. If you try to rearrange a document or make edits that cause significant changes regarding allocated space you will not get what you expect. The way flows in a PDF is not always what you expect so shortening or lengthening paragraphs will give strange results oftentimes. PDF editors are not page layout programs. So if your edits are minor and you must edit the of an existing PDF get your hands on a PDF editor (not free). If you can get away with obscuring existing and s you just need good annotation capability. If you have a Mac you can use Preview to annotate or cut and paste graphics. The free Acrobat Reader allows some annotations too. You can use annotations to white-out a section of and put in new annotation to replace it. If you are careful it may not be that noticeable. You can white-out s to alter graphics. You can create a Frankenstein Monster of a document if you like using free PDF annotation software. But then youll ask yourself why you didn just make a whole new document in Microsoft Word something you could call your own.
Microsoft Office: Is there any acceptable way to convert a Word document to a PDF?
Word pretends to be able to do fancy layouts but if youre creating stuff for publication then it always better to use some other software (I spent a lot of time tweaking the graphics on research papers to get them through academic publisher requirements). I found one way was to import the document into MS Publisher which will allow you to go up to 11 dpi then set the resolution for each graphic element. But that doesn always work and Publisher is (deservedly) not installed by many nowadays as being mostly useless. Never had problems with the Adobe Acrobat - Word plugin unless something had been done (filter shadow etc) to the vector object in Word and then the effect and the vector is rasterised. Transparency is always a bit hit-and-miss but I found that creating a backboard made things better (large rectangle the size of the page with the fill and surrounds in white and sent to the bottom of all the pages objects). Or using Inkscape I would re-check each vector item just to make sure that it was still a vector save them as eps files then use Publisher for layout. Basically it all a faff and you finally realise there a reason for Adobe Illustrator - it creates perfect PDF.
How can Elasticsearch be used for indexing the full text of PDF and Microsoft Office documents?
There are three parts to your question and Ill tackle them one at a time. First how to read PDF documents. Because PDF is such a popular de facto italic standard there are numerous libraries available in various languages for both reading and writing PDF. For Java for instance one can use PDFBox A Java PDF Library s and for Ruby there yob s . Similarly there are numerous libraries for reading and writing Microsoft Office documents despite their lack of a clear specification. While I canment on their accuracy or support for older or newer formats a quick search reveals Apache POI - the Java API for Microsoft Documents s and similarly chrahunt s for Ruby. There are a multitude of other libraries both open source and proprietary for Java Ruby and almost every other popular language. So there no dearth of ways to open and read both PDF and Microsoft Office documents. By read of course I mean having the program extract the (devoid of structure or formatting metadata) within. That what you want for full indexing. Most of the above libraries are also capable of letting you read the document metadatasuch as authorship timestamp(s) you might also want to index. Which brings me to the third and final part of your question how to index documents in ElasticSearch. ElasticSearch provides a robust and well documented API s for submitting indexing and searching for documents. However youll probably also want to use a ready made library or client for your choice of language such as the official Java API s or elastic s . For code samples all libraries should have available documentation and sample code and this is a question that is relatively popular with ample Q&A on Stack Overflow s .
